Domani 4 maggio per molti di noi sarà un giorno normale, ma per uno di noi sarà il giorno del suo ottantesimo compleanno. Giovanni Frisiani domani festeggerà il suo compleanno e tutto il mondo del football gli dovrebbe rendere omaggio. Conosco Giovanni da oltre trenat’anni, quando incuriosito dai racconti di Barbara , sua figlia, una tra le prime donne a scendere in campo, la affiancò per capire come mai lei mostrasse tanto interesse per un ruolo considerato marginale nello sport in generale. Fu amore a prima vista. Fu uno dei pochi a capire che molte volte, in camp,  vale più un sorriso che una ramanzina, che sdrammatizzare poteva essere una via ugualmente efficace per tenere in mano una partita, ma capì anche immediatamente che il lavoro della squadra degli arbitri aveva un compito di grande responsabilità: la tutele dell’incolumità dei  giocatori. La sua intelligenza e la sua passione lo portarono ben presto ai vertici dell’associazione arbitri, dove si scontro con poteri e logiche a lui sconosciuti. Purtroppo per lui aveva due grandi difetti: la passione e l’onestà, non solo intellettuale. La prima gli fece digerire molti rospi amari, la seconda lo convinse a lasciare le cariche per rimanere a lei fedele.  La polemica non gli appartiene e per questo non sarò io in questo giorno a tirarla fuori. Oggi voglio limitarmi a ringraziarlo per quanto fatto per il football  e per la nostra squadra degli arbitri alla quale ha saputo trasmettere la sua filosofia. Credo che oggi mi perdonerà se pubblico di seguito,  il giudizio dato su di lui, due anni fa, dal supervisore degli arbitri della NFL , dopo averlo visto il filmato nel quale eri White Cap  nel 31° Superbowl. Ho tagliato la parte che riguarda gli altri arbitri. Tanti auguri Giovanni e non farci mancare i tuoi preziosi consigli, apparteniamo a quelle persone che pensano che i non più giovanissimi, ci possano trasmettere molte delle loro esperienze e della loro saggezza. First, my congratulations to Giovanni Frisiani for a great game and a fabulous career!.  Working the Superbowl at age 79 is a remarkable feet and one I am sure has not been matched in any other championship game in any other football game or any other sport for that matter.  What a record! 

First some general comments.  I was very impressed how all of you moved during the game.  Being in the right spot at the right time is one of the basics of good officiating.  You moved to the ball when the play was over and then moved very well to handle the ball.  You deep officials and the Umpire did a particularly good job of moving after each play to help the pace of the game.  Players will be aware of where you are and what you are watching after each play.  When they see you moving so well, they are much less likely to want to do something “extra” knowing that you are watching them and nearby.  Always remember that watching what happens after a play is more important than getting the ball so do not turn too quickly to get a ball in place until you know that everything is OK with the players.  Also remember too look around the covering official because things can happen near him but in a way that he does not see it because he is focused on the downed player and ball.  That is where the late hits and piling on can occur and the officials that are away from the play are in much better position to see these late acts.

Gentlemen, my congratulations for a well worked game.  I enjoyed watching it and please do not think I am being critical of what you  did on the field.  One of the great things about officiating is the challenge to always do it better next time.  I have never seen a perfectly officiated game.  On the other hand, I have never seen a perfectly played football game.  And I promise you I have NEVER seen a perfectly coached football game.  Keep up the good work and I hope to meet all of you one of these days.  My special praise to you Giovanni, wonderful day of football.
